Fictional letter from an old Russian woman to Vladimir Putin 🇷🇺🇺🇸🇧🇷

Elderly woman in a headscarf writing a letter beside a cup of tea.

My beloved Vova. I am old now and I never learned to write electronic letters, and so I am writing to you by hand. Please excuse my familiarity, my brevity and my frankness.

Vova, I have followed you from the very beginning of your illustrious career. You were always handsome and smart — a real «lady killer». You led our beloved homeland with intelligence and compassion. But something changed, dear Vova. I hear that fewer comrades and citizens refer to you in endearing terms now, and that some mockingly call you Бункерный дед behind your back. There is much rumor and speculation about your physical and mental health, and you no longer look happy on the television.

The world is full of difficult challenges, to be sure, but Russians have historically always been adept at banding together against hardships and calamity. Something feels different now. The wind is no longer at our backs, and your few friends and supporters in and outside of Russia seem like a motley crew. Dear Vova, are you certain that you can trust those around you? Many seem to have their own ambitions, and it would appear that some of these perhaps see you as standing in their way.

Vova, many of my friends have lost their sons and grandsons in this senseless war. It did not seem senseless in the beginning, but the situation has since spun out of control. Even patriots like myself are now worried — worried for Russia, our men, our livelihoods, and for you dear Vova. Can you not find a way out of this hopeless situation? There has been too much war and too many threats in our history. We are weary.

Don’t you agree, beloved Vova?!! Make an old woman happy. Return to your position as a respected leader of the world. Then, and only then, will Russia once again enjoy peace and properity … and friendship.

Blessings from

Anya Levedeva, 96 anos
