“Just a Misunderstanding” ✍🏻🇺🇸

— Adam Donaldson Powell

“Just a Misunderstanding”

They said it was only a misunderstanding—
a misplaced word,
a tone misread,
a door that somehow closed
by accident
when your hand reached for the handle.

They said the joke was harmless,
the doubt was reasonable,
the silence was nothing personal,
the pattern was just coincidence
stacking itself neatly
over and over
against the same people.

They called it a misunderstanding
when they mistook your age
for your ending,
your youth
for your ignorance,
your experience
for something that made you difficult.

They called it a misunderstanding
when they measured your worth
through the color of your skin,
your name,
your accent,
the history they refused to learn
but still felt entitled to judge.

They called it a misunderstanding
when confidence became arrogance
in your mouth,
but became leadership
in theirs.

When ambition became aggression.
When boundaries became hostility.
When a voice became “too much”
only because someone else
was used to hearing it smaller.

They called it a misunderstanding
because the truth had a sharper name:
bias.
Power.
Control.
A system that works best
when no one admits
it is working.

And then came the oldest trick:

“What did you do
to make them react that way?”

What did you wear?
How did you speak?
Why didn’t you leave?
Why didn’t you fight back?
Why didn’t you explain yourself
more clearly
to the person
determined not to understand?

The burden was handed back
like a package marked fragile:

Handle carefully.
It contains the blame.

The wounded are asked
to prove the wound.
The ignored are asked
to prove they were ignored.
The underestimated are asked
to perform greatness
before they are allowed
to be believed.

But a pattern is not a misunderstanding
just because it is repeated quietly.

A locked door
is not an accident
when the key only works
for some hands.

A shadow is not proof
that the person standing in it
failed to shine.

And the world changes
when we stop asking
why the person was hurt
and start asking
who built the thing
that kept hurting them.
