”misunderstanding”? my arse!

Echoes of an Unspoken Word

The Protagonists:

  • LYRA: (Weary but sharp, speaking from a place of disappointment.)
  • ELARA: (Defensive, quick-witted, struggling to maintain composure.)

(Setting: A quiet garden, late evening. Rain gently taps on an old stone arch. Lyra stands beneath the arch; Elara paces just beyond the dry path.)

LYRA Your words, Elara, are like birds that fly across this garden in the evening light. They take their shape from wherever they alight, Yet leave the truth behind, beneath the sky. I saw the action; witnessed what was done. A promise broken, simple as the sun.

ELARA You weave a tapestry from smoke and air, dear Lyra. My actions? I stood and walked Through the same garden that we often talked within. But meanings shift, beyond our care. Your heart was already bruised, and so it seems You projected shadows on my waking dreams. You misunderstood. It is your sight that failed.

LYRA “Misunderstood”? That old, convenient shield! A coward’s armor, polished and worn thin. It turns the wound back to where it did begin, And claims the watcher is the only field where lies took root. You cannot say, “I missed the mark,” so you declare my vision struck the dark.

ELARA And if it did? Are hearts not complex things? Why is my path, my choice, subject to your gauge? You see a fracture; I see a turning page. Why must the fault be mine, when silence brings Its own translation? Maybe the fault lies In your demand that I speak only through your eyes.

LYRA Silence speaks, Elara. Oh, it shouts the truth. When courage fails to name the deed it dared. You dodge the mirror. Tell me, are you scared to see the cracks? It steals the strength of youth — This constant dodge, this smooth “you heard me wrong.” It hollows out the singer and the song.

ELARA I hollow nothing! I simply claim my grace to be complex, to be misunderstood. Why is responsibility only defined by good Intention, judged by your exacting pace? It’s easy, Lyra, perched upon your stone, to claim the clarity you’ve never shown.

LYRA Clarity isn’t comfort. Clarity is the cost. I stand here, yes. My own reflection clear. And in the rain, I watch you disappear behind the ‘misunderstanding’ you have tossed between us like a wall. A wall you built, brick by brick, of evaded, silent guilt.

ELARA And if I build it? If I cannot bear to see the fracture as you see it? Why Is that a crime? The cowardice, or the cry of someone simply tired of the glare of your perception? Is it your virtue, then, To force confessions, again and again?

LYRA It is not virtue. It is the need for rain to fall upon the truth. To let it wash away the careful dust. The brutal squash of ‘maybe not.’ The refusal to sustain a world where actions glide without a name. Stand in your choices, Elara. Claim the blame.

(The rain falls harder, blurring the garden, but the two figures remain defined against the gray light.)
