“Terra do ‘Depende’” / “Land of ‘It Depends’” 🇧🇷🇺🇸🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

“Terra do ‘Depende’”

No aeroporto o gringo desembarca,
— pergunta animado,
Enquanto o povo responde: “Calma aí, complicado.”

É liberal no discurso oficial,

É liberal no discurso oficial,

Final:
Brasil não cabe em tese simplificada,
Nem em manchete importada,
É país onde o “depende” virou filosofia,
E a incoerência… patrimônio da alegria.

“Land of ‘It Depends’” 🇺🇸

(Satirical parody about cultural contradictions perceived by foreigners)

At the airport, the foreigner disembarks,
With sunscreen and a ready-made theory in his suitcase,

“Is it carnival all year round?” he asks excitedly,
While the people respond: “Hold on, it’s complicated.”

On the beach there’s glitter, microscopic bikinis,
Choreographed poses, philosophical tans,
But they talk about sex tourism on the television news,
And half the country shouts: “Not here, my brother!”

Chorus:
Brazil is “yes,” Brazil is “no,”
It’s contradiction in high definition,
It has modern laws, old morals,
It has free kissing and fights on the corner.

It’s liberal in official discourse,
Conservative at Christmas lunch,
Everyone judges everyone else in the end,
But they dance together on the national holiday.

There’s a porn industry exporting “tropical heat,”
Subtitled content for international perverts,
While the bakery owner says indignantly:

“What an absurd lack of tradition!”

In soap operas, diversity in prime time,
In the city center, a rainbow flag covers everything,
But on the bus someone whispers sideways,
As if the 21st century were a sin.

In the metropolis there’s a gigantic parade,
Influencer, drag queen, carnival aesthetics,
But in the countryside the silence is deeper,
Because not everyone wants to face the world.

There are macho guys pretending to be brave,
But they’re terrified of their independent ex,
Because they learned that respect comes suddenly,
When the “love of their life” becomes a just lawsuit.

Chorus:
Brazil is “yes,” Brazil is “no,”
It’s contradiction in high definition,
It has modern laws, old morals,
It has free kisses and fights on the corner.

It’s liberal in official discourse,
Conservative at Christmas lunch,
Everyone judges everyone else in the end,
But dances together on national holidays.

Foreigners try to do statistics,
But here even opinion is probabilistic,
In one neighborhood it’s avant-garde, in another tradition,
Every corner changes the constitution.

There are pastors on TikTok doing sensual trends,
There are activists and reactionaries in the same carnival parade,
And at the end of the night, after the discussion,
Everyone sings pagode in the same direction.

Final: Brazil doesn’t fit into simplified theories,
Nor into imported headlines,
It’s a country where “it depends” has become a philosophy,
And incoherence… the heritage of joy.
